Many actors have been part of the Mission: Impossible franchise over the years, but only one has appeared with Tom Cruise in every single installment.

One of the most reliable action movie series in recent cinematic history is the Mission: Impossible series. The first movie in the series broke the record for the biggest opening weekend in May when it was released in 1996. It became the third-highest grossing movie of the year after earning $75 million in its first six days. Since then, a sizable fan base has grown for Mission: Impossible. Fans are asking if main protagonist Tom Cruise intends to continue playing the character of Ethan Hunt even after Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two appears in June 2024 (with filming already beginning for an eighth).

The action series has its roots in a 1960s television program of the same name and is co-produced and distributed by Paramount Pictures. It is strongly marked by intense action sequences and complex stunts, just like most of Cruise’s other significant films. In Dead Reckoning Part One, which will be released in theaters all over the world in July 2023, the Hollywood celebrity did the most hazardous of those. It involves him riding his motorcycle over the cliff’s edge.

In the years since the first Mission: Impossible film, many actors have been fortunate enough to make up part of the cast line-up. Only one of them, however, has been as consistent as Cruise in featuring in every single installment.

Which Actors Have Made The Most Appearances In The Mission: Impossible Franchise?

Paramount Pictures has been very varied in its casting process for each of the Mission: Impossible installments, with the cast line-up looking significantly different from film to film. Since the franchise primarily revolves around the character of Ethan Hunt, however, it makes sense that Tom Cruise has appeared in every one of the seven films released so far.

That is not to say that he is the only regular on the list. English actor Simon Pegg joined the franchise as the lovable tech genius Benji Dunn in Mission: Impossible III in 2006. He would go on to reprise the role in the four subsequent installments, and is also set to return in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two.

In the 2015 film Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Rebecca Ferguson made her acting debut as the mysterious former MI6 agent Ilsa Faust. In Dead Reckoning Part One and Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018), she returned to the role. In the movie Mission: Impossible, Michelle Monaghan portrays Julia Meade, a psychiatrist and the ex-wife of Ethan Hunt. The franchise has seen sporadic but notable cameos from the Source Code actor. Other notable actors that have appeared on many occasions in the Mission: Impossible cast include Jeremy Renner, Sean Harris, and Alec Baldwin.

Ving Rhames Is The Only Actor To Star In Every Mission: Impossible Film Apart From Tom Cruise

While all these stars have enjoyed multiple appearances in various Mission: Impossible films, their characters never endured long enough to be involved in all seven installments. The only person to whom this honor has fallen upon—besides Tom Cruise—is none other than Pulp Fiction and The District star Ving Rhames. Rhames has been a fixture of the Mission: Impossible franchise as Luther Stickel, a skilled computer expert who helps Ethan Hunt with his missions. Even though Cruise is unquestionably the face of the MI brand, Luther has been described as “the beating heart” of the franchise, and “the glue that holds the Impossible Mission Force (IMF) together.”

Things might have been very different, though, as Luther was reportedly meant to die in the very first film. In an interview with Buzzfeed, Rhames revealed that he appealed to director Brian De Palma’s sense of representation and the character survived. “I remember saying to the director, ‘Look, why does the black man die 15 pages into the script?” he said.

How Does Ving Rhames Feel About Working In The Mission: Impossible Franchise With Tom Cruise?

Despite the fact that Ving Rhames has a long list of other acting roles to his name, his performance as Luther Stickell in Mission: Impossible unquestionably stands out in his resume. Fans anticipate seeing Luther Stickell in every new installment thanks to his dependable presence in the tale, which gave the movies a feeling of consistency and dependability. Nevertheless, Rhames has received just as much from Mission: Impossible as he has given. He admitted to The Source in 2015 that Tom Cruise and the franchise had made him feel like he belongs.

“First and foremost, I want to thank Tom Cruise for letting me be a part of this. I’ve known Tom Cruise for about 18 years now,” remarked Rhames. This could be the first sequel that an African-American male appears in five times. That’s the past. That might be the past. We must conduct the research. The black man is present in all five of them, is still alive, and is being paid. Though I say it in jest, there aren’t many instances like that in American film history.
